Anti-hyperglycemic and antioxidant potential of Croton bonplandianus. Bail fractions in correlation with polyphenol content

Objective(s):Diabetes mellitus, a carbohydrate metabolic disorder, occurs due to absolute or relative deficiency of insulin. Current treatment strategies involve either preventing or delaying the intestinal absorption of glucose to lower the levels of postprandial hyperglycemia (PPHG). Herbal remedies have been since ancient times for treating diabetes mellitus. Therefore, identifying novel phy...

Postprandial myocardial perfusion in healthy subjects and in type 2 diabetic patients.

BACKGROUND In diabetic patients, postprandial hyperglycemia is a more powerful risk factor for cardiovascular disease than fasting hyperglycemia itself. A negative influence of acute hyperglycemia on systemic endothelial function (brachial artery) has been shown. However, myocardial perfusion during postprandial hyperglycemia has not been investigated. METHODS AND RESULTS We evaluated the eff...

Postprandial hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia-generated glycoxidative stress: its contribution to the pathogenesis of diabetes complications.

Postprandial glucose and triglyceride increments after a mixed meal are more prolonged in people with type 1 and 2 diabetes or with impaired glucose tolerance than in normal individuals. Evidence in the literature suggests that these transient increases represent an additional and independent risk for chronic hyperglycemia to induce endothelial dysfunction, an important fact for the development...

Cinnamon extract inhibits α-glucosidase activity and dampens postprandial glucose excursion in diabetic rats

BACKGROUND α-glucosidase inhibitors regulate postprandial hyperglycemia (PPHG) by impeding the rate of carbohydrate digestion in the small intestine and thereby hampering the diet associated acute glucose excursion. PPHG is a major risk factor for diabetic vascular complications leading to disabilities and mortality in diabetics. Cinnamomum zeylanicum, a spice, has been used in traditional medi...

A review of nateglinide in the management of patients with type 2 diabetes

Impaired insulin secretion occurs early in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and is chronic and progressive, resulting initially in impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and eventually in T2DM. As most patients with T2DM have both insulin resistance and insulin deficiency, therapy for T2DM should aim to control not only fasting, but also postprandial plasma glucose levels. While or...
